Discovery Loopとは何をする会社か
Discovery Loopはジェフ・ディーン氏が本人のアカウントで公表した新会社です。形態は Public Benefit Corporation。営利企業でありながら定款に公益目的を掲げる、米国の会社形態です。
掲げている使命は機械学習・科学・工学を自動化し、発見と進歩を加速すること。抽象的に聞こえますが、手法はもう少し具体的に示されています。実験のループを自動化するという方針で、科学と工学の多くの分野に広く当てはまるはず、という見立てです。
着手する順序も述べられています。まずは機械学習の研究と工学の自動化から。そこで得た能力をまず自社の技術基盤の最適化に使い、その後に他領域へ広げる——自分たちを最初の顧客にするという進め方です。AIを道具として使うのではなく、研究の反復自体を機械に任せる構えになります。

創業者4名という顔ぶれ
ここが今回いちばん重い部分です。創業者はジェフ・ディーン氏、サンジェイ・ゲマワット氏、オリオル・ヴィニャルス氏、クオック・レ氏の4名。本人は14年から30年にわたり一緒に働いてきた間柄だと書いています。
注意しておく点があります。Googleの社内メッセージが名前を挙げているのはディーン氏とゲマワット氏の2名だけです。4名という数字はディーン氏本人の発表に基づきます。出典によって人数が違うので、引用するときは元をそろえたい。
ピチャイ氏のメッセージ側はディーン氏の27年の在籍と、ゲマワット氏とともに独立したPublic Benefit Corporationを立ち上げることを伝えています。なおGoogle側は「新しいことに挑戦したい時期」という書き方をしており、「退社」という語は使っていません。初期の検索インフラから現代のAI時代を作ったニューラルネットワークまで、両氏が重要な技術転換を牽引したという評価も添えられました。

Googleとの関係は続く
退社とはいえ縁が切れる形ではありません。Googleは創業投資家であり、クラウドの提携先として関わり続けると明記しています。機械学習システムと関連インフラの進歩に向けた研究の枠組みでも協業するとしています。
計算資源が要る領域なので、クラウド提携が最初から確保されている意味は小さくありません。出ていった先が出ていかれた側の顧客にもなる構図です。
この発表はGoogle DeepMindの体制変更と同じメッセージの中で告げられました。ハサビス氏が日々の運営を引き渡し、Googleの研究体制が動いた日と重なっています。

公式サイトでは使命・手法・最初に取り組む領域・自社を最初の適用先とする方針・最終的に狙う課題群まで示されています。一方で製品も提供時期も出ていません。成果で評価できる段階ではない、ということです。それでも、インフラと基盤モデルの両方を作ってきた人たちが揃って研究の自動化へ向かったという事実だけで、この領域の重さは伝わります。
