The detail that stands out is that orders grew faster (13x) than sessions did (8x). More people arrived, and a larger share of them bought. Shopify positions the channel as one of the fastest-growing acquisition routes in ecommerce.
That is not the same as saying AI referrals are now where the volume is. These are multiples measured from a small base, and as the numbers below show, organic search still wins on absolute volume. The first thing to keep straight when reading this report is the difference between a large multiple and a large quantity. Confusing the two is how a budget gets misallocated.

Why the data says AI-referred traffic is higher quality
A steep growth rate on a small base is ordinary for any new channel. What makes Shopify's analysis useful is that it goes further, into who these visitors are once they arrive.
More than half land straight on a product page
This is the number that explains the rest. More than half of AI-referred sessions begin on a product detail page, against roughly 20% for organic search. The entry point is the thing being bought, not an article about it.
The reason lies in how the recommendations are phrased. AI platforms tend to name specific products rather than brands or categories, so shoppers land on the page matching what they asked about, already prepared to buy.
Shopify calls this journey compression. Discovery and consideration fold into a single conversation. Steps that used to be spread across several searches and page visits now finish in one exchange, so purchase intent is already strong at the moment of arrival.

The conversion advantage held in 23 of 25 categories
The quality gap shows up in both conversion rate and order value. Comparing sessions that land on a product detail page, AI-referred visitors convert at nearly 50% higher rates than organic search visitors, and the average value of their orders is 14% higher.
The easy thing to miss is what is being compared to what. This is not "AI referrals close 1.5x more often overall." It is a comparison held to sessions that begin on a product detail page. Placing channels with different landing page mixes side by side would exaggerate the gap, so Shopify levelled the condition first.
With that condition in place, the advantage appeared in 23 of 25 merchant categories, averaging 56% within them. That is the figure showing this is not an artefact of one or two industries. Which two categories were the exceptions is not published. The only way to find out where your store sits is to look at your own data.

Organic search has not been displaced
After enough talk of multiples it is tempting to read this as traffic moving from search to AI. Shopify rules that out directly. Organic search remains the dominant discovery channel, and even with every tracked AI platform added together, organic still sends more sessions.
Same-store organic sessions also rose roughly 5% over the same window. Search did not shrink by the amount AI grew. A new entrance opened; the existing one did not narrow.
That picture is consistent with the business figures on the search side. Google's search advertising revenue was still climbing in Alphabet's Q2 2026 results, so the rise of AI search and a contraction in search are not, so far, happening at once.
The practical implication is unambiguous. Cutting existing SEO to fund AI search work is not supported by this data. While organic is the largest source, weakening it simply reduces the total.

What to change on your product pages to get picked by AI search
So what actually grows the AI-referred channel? Shopify points in two directions: measure it separately, and raise the quality of the pages.
Measure AI traffic as its own channel
Left mixed in with other referral traffic, AI referrals tell you nothing you can act on. In the Shopify admin you can filter any existing report by AI answer engines under Referrer Channel and see ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude individually. Gemini is the exception: filter Referrer Host for gemini.google.com.
Splitting it out is only half the job. Put conversion rate, average order value and revenue per session next to organic search. Looking at session counts alone, the base is small enough that the channel reads as noise, and the quality difference never surfaces.

Raise the density of structured data and product information
The other direction is preparing what the AI reads. AI agents read and evaluate storefronts continuously, and the quality and structure of what they find is what decides whether you get recommended.
The core of it is product pages with detailed descriptions, comprehensive attribute data and clean technical architecture. Structured data markup — product schema and review schema — sits alongside that. JSON-LD, the notation used to embed that markup, fails to be read at all when the syntax is wrong, so it is safer to format and check it before shipping.
Here is the part that matters most: this list is almost the same as the SEO fundamentals. Many AI systems retrieve content from web search indexes when generating answers, which makes your search ranking a direct input into whether an AI recommends you. What to do with AI search traffic
Three things come out of this data. The first is that AI referrals have grown enormously as a multiple but remain far behind organic search in scale. The second is that the visitors are measurably different: even with the landing page condition levelled, they beat organic on both conversion rate and average order value.
The third is that the work does not fork away from SEO. As long as the search index is what AI reads from, raising your ranking and getting cited by an AI point the same way. Rather than a separate AI-search budget or a separate team, the data favours going back to the structured data and product detail you never got around to.
To check it for your own store, start by separating referral traffic into AI and organic and putting conversion rate and average order value side by side. Shopify's figures describe its own merchant base, so whether you sit with the 23 categories or the two exceptions is something only your data can answer.
