Markdown Converter Tools

Convert Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, HTML, and URLs into Markdown right in your browser. Perfect for feeding documents to ChatGPT or Claude, and for importing into Obsidian, Notion, Zenn, and note. Free and no sign-up required.

What you can do with Markdown converter tools

The sakutto Markdown category lets you convert everyday business files — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, HTML, and public URLs — into Markdown (.md). Every tool is free, requires no sign-up, and runs safely in the browser.

Convert Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to Markdown

Upload .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx files and get Markdown output that preserves headings, tables, lists, and emphasis. Word styles, Excel tables, and PowerPoint slide text are faithfully mapped to Markdown syntax.

Convert PDF, HTML files, and URLs to Markdown

Extract text from PDFs, convert local HTML files, or just paste a public URL to convert the page into Markdown. Blog posts, documentation, and reference sites can be downloaded as .md in one click.

Optimized for LLM and RAG preprocessing

Feeding documents as plain text or raw PDFs to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini often loses structure. sakutto tools preserve heading hierarchy, tables, and lists in Markdown — ideal for RAG pipelines and prompt preprocessing.

How to convert files to Markdown in 3 steps

Every Markdown converter in sakutto follows the same 3-step flow, so first-time users get results immediately.

Pick the converter for your file format

Choose the dedicated tool for your input format (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, HTML, or URL) from the cards on this page. Each tool is fine-tuned for its specific format rather than being a one-size-fits-all converter.

Upload your file or paste a URL

Drag and drop or click to select files — or paste a URL into the URL converter. Batch conversion is supported (Free plan: up to 3 files at once).

Copy or download the Markdown

Converted Markdown is shown with a live preview. Copy it straight into ChatGPT or Obsidian, download it as a .md file, or export multiple files as a single ZIP.

Your uploaded files are never sent to our servers

sakutto's Markdown converters are designed with file safety as the top priority, so you can handle confidential and internal documents with confidence.

Browser-only Markdown conversion

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, and HTML conversions all run entirely client-side in your browser. The files themselves are never uploaded. You can even disconnect from the internet and most conversions will keep working.

URL converter keeps no content on the server

The URL-to-Markdown tool uses a Cloudflare Workers proxy for CORS, but the fetched page body is never persisted on the server — only a short-lived (1h TTL) edge cache is used.

Use cases: ChatGPT, Obsidian, Zenn and more

Converting files to Markdown unlocks a lot of everyday value for writers, developers, and knowledge workers.

Preprocess documents as md before sending to LLMs

Throwing a raw Word file or PDF at ChatGPT or Claude often breaks layout and hurts accuracy. Converting to Markdown first preserves heading hierarchy and tables, which dramatically improves summarization, translation, and Q&A quality.

Migrate knowledge into Obsidian or Notion

When you want to move meeting notes or manuals written in Word into Obsidian or Notion, hand-reformatting is impractical. Bulk-convert them to md with sakutto and drop them straight into your knowledge base.

Draft content for Zenn, note, or GitHub

Zenn and GitHub README files require Markdown. Use sakutto to lift PowerPoint slides into technical blog posts or to paste Word drafts into note — all while keeping the formatting clean.

Which Markdown converter should I use?

Each file format has a dedicated tool tuned specifically for it. Use the quick reference below if you're not sure where to start.

Quick reference by input format (Word/Excel/PPT/PDF/HTML/URL)

Word (.docx) → word-to-markdown / Excel (.xlsx) → excel-to-markdown / PowerPoint (.pptx) → powerpoint-to-markdown / PDF (.pdf) → pdf-to-markdown / HTML files → html-to-markdown / web pages by URL → url-to-markdown. Dedicated tools give better accuracy than a single unified converter.

Converting Markdown to other formats

If you need to go the other direction, Markdown → HTML / PDF / Word converters are planned for future release.

Markdown — Frequently Asked Questions

What is Markdown?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language that expresses formatting (headings, lists, links, emphasis, etc.) with simple symbols. Files use the .md extension, and Markdown is the standard format on GitHub, Obsidian, Notion, Zenn, note, ChatGPT, and many more services.

Is it really free? Do I need to sign up?

All sakutto Markdown converters are free and require no sign-up. The Free plan supports up to 3 files per batch. Upgrade to Pro if you need to process larger batches.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, and HTML files are all converted entirely in your browser — they never touch our servers. The URL converter uses a Cloudflare Workers proxy to fetch pages, but the response body is never persisted server-side.

Are Word tables and images preserved in Markdown?

Tables are converted using GFM (GitHub Flavored Markdown) syntax. Headings, bullet/numbered lists, emphasis, and links are all preserved. For images, the current version extracts alt text; image files themselves need to be downloaded separately.

Can I use this for LLM or RAG preprocessing?

Yes — LLM preprocessing is one of the primary use cases. Converting to Markdown preserves heading hierarchy, tables, and lists, which significantly improves the quality of ChatGPT/Claude summarization, translation, and Q&A. It's also ideal for building RAG knowledge bases with Obsidian, LangChain, or LlamaIndex.
