Manuscript Page Conversion

When an assignment specifies "approximately X manuscript pages," here's how to calculate.

Formula: Character count ÷ 400 = number of pages

CharactersPages
8002
1,2003
2,0005
4,00010
8,00020

200-Character Manuscript Paper

When You're Short on Characters

How to Add Substance

  • Add specific examples: Support abstract explanations with concrete cases
  • Cite evidence: Back up claims with data and quotations
  • Address counterarguments: Anticipate objections and respond to them
  • Deepen your analysis: Expand on interpretations and future implications

What NOT to Do

  • Rephrase and repeat the same point
  • Add irrelevant content
  • Use padding phrases like "It can be thought that this means that..."

When You Have Too Many Characters

  • Trim wordy phrases: "It is possible to do" → "You can do"
  • Merge duplicate points: Check for repeated arguments
  • Remove unnecessary modifiers: Test whether removing "very," "extremely," or "quite" changes the meaning
  • Summarize long quotes: Extract only the key points

FAQ

Does "at least 3,000 characters" mean exactly 3,000 is okay?

Generally yes, but content quality matters more than hitting an exact number. Aim for 3,200–3,500 characters to give yourself a comfortable margin.

Do figures and tables count toward the character limit?

Figures and tables themselves usually don't count. Whether their captions are included depends on the assignment instructions. When in doubt, ask your instructor.

Is character count the same as word count in English?

No. English assignments typically use word count, while Japanese assignments use character count. In English, each word (not each character) is counted as one unit.

Why does my count differ between Word and online tools?

They handle spaces, line breaks, and special characters differently. If your assignment specifies a tool, use that tool's count. Otherwise, character count excluding spaces is the most common standard.

Summary

For reports and essays, the standard is to count characters excluding spaces and line breaks. sakutto's character counter shows multiple counting methods simultaneously and includes automatic manuscript page conversion.
