What an AI gateway actually does
An AI gateway sits between an application and the model providers, taking one API call and deciding which of hundreds of models should serve it. OpenRouter's pitch to developers is a single access point: integrate once, pick per request by capability and price, and avoid getting locked to one provider.
Its own description of the job is broader than routing. The company lists four responsibilities: routing, reliability, cost optimization, and compliance. Read that list again with a payments company in mind. Three of the four describe what a payments network does for card transactions — pick a working path, keep it up, satisfy the auditors — applied to inference calls instead.
OpenRouter's own explanation of why enterprise investors backed it says the same thing from the buyer's side: as organizations move from single-model pilots to multi-model production systems, they need a routing and gateway layer purpose-built for that complexity. The scale it runs at is what makes owning that layer strategic rather than convenient.

Why the fit is not a stretch
The framing was in place before any of this. At the Series B, OpenRouter's CEO described the company as the equivalent of Stripe for AI — one access point across different systems, no lock-in. That is a claim about position in the stack, not a marketing line: payments consolidated a fragmented set of processors behind a single integration, and model access is fragmenting the same way.
There is also a metering argument. Whoever sits at the routing layer sees every call, every model choice, and every token, which is exactly the vantage point from which you bill for AI usage. What to watch
Two questions decide whether this matters to anyone building on OpenRouter today: whether the pricing model survives, and whether provider coverage stays neutral once an owner has a commercial interest in some of those providers. Neither is answerable until somebody puts out a statement. Until then the newsrooms to watch are Stripe's own and OpenRouter's blog, not the aggregators.
