Pricing Held at Opus 4.8 Levels

Claude Opus 5 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. Tokens are the small units text is split into, and AI pricing is calculated per token. The price is exactly what the previous Opus 4.8 charged, with performance the only thing that moved.

Where It Lands on Benchmarks

Anthropic cites both coding and knowledge work. On Frontier-Bench v0.1, a software development evaluation, Opus 5 surpasses every other model and more than doubles Opus 4.8's score, while the cost per task goes down rather than up.

On CursorBench 3.2 the gap to Fable 5's peak score comes in under 0.5%, at half the cost per task. The pattern holds on the knowledge-work side. Effort specifies how much work the model puts into thinking. Turn it up to prioritise intelligence, turn it down to conserve tokens for faster and cheaper results. It is also described as the best so far at avoiding reckless actions with irreversible side effects. The more work is handed to an AI to run unattended over long stretches, the more that property earns its keep.

Cyber Capability Is Deliberately Held Back

On offensive cyber work, a line is drawn. The model's ability to find vulnerabilities has risen close to Mythos 5, but its ability to turn those vulnerabilities into material threats, effectively writing working exploits, remains substantially behind.

Conclusion

Claude Opus 5 is a solid, practical update: the price stayed put and the performance went up. With a measured gap to Fable 5 under 0.5% on CursorBench 3.2 at half the cost, putting day-to-day production work on Opus 5 is the straightforward choice.
